Learn about the overspeed governor of an elevator

17/04/2025

The overspeed governor is a very important component of an elevator.

The overspeed governor helps to stop the cabin instantaneously in the event that the elevator travels beyond its rated speed. The interconnected safety gear helps the cabin grip firmly onto the guide rails. Cases considered overspeed include: control system malfunctions, cable breakage, cable slippage, etc.

Operating Principle:

The overspeed governor operates based on the principle of a centrifugal governor. When the elevator operates normally, the gears and pawls of the safety gear function normally. In the event that the cabin exceeds its designed speed (rated speed), the safety gear pawls will fly out and engage with the gear, acting on the safety gear interlocking cable to pull the safety gear brake to grip the guide rails.

This is a mandatory device for all types of elevators. The safety gear bears a very large load to hold the entire weight of the cabin, so it is also manufactured very specially. In addition, periodic inspection and maintenance are necessary to ensure that it always functions properly.
